This large-scale abstract sculpture of Medusa is a bold and striking work of art that captures the essence of the mythological figure while pushing the boundaries of traditional representation. Rather than depicting Medusa in a realistic or literal way, the sculpture takes on an abstract form that evokes the snake-haired, fearsome nature of the mythological figure. While there remains the eyes, nose, and mouth facial structure, there are added components and shapes in order to make the face less obvious. In addition, the piece maintains an air of Medusa’s nature with the addition of coiled spirals on the top of the head to invoke the distinct snakes arising in place of hair on Medusa’s head. The use of black over red paint at the top of her head expresses the true fury of her character without resorting to words to describe it. Medusa is a figure that has been depicted in art for centuries. The point of a piece such as this is to depart from the typical and move into the space of using colors, shapes, and welding techniques to convey a character and her emotions. Not only that but the history of mythological creatures and themes has been taught for centuries and remains an integral component of education today. Therefore, This piece holds credence for all age groups and can be broadly construed according to the viewer’s perception.
